Letters from my Windmill: The priest of Cucugnan (1967)
22 February 1967
TV adaptation by Marcel Pagnol of the play by Alexandre Dumas the younger, directed by François Gir.
As a preamble, Marcel Pagnol gave a long presentation of Dumas’ drama and the adaptation he made of it. The well-known story of The Lady of the Camellias is about the love of a young man from a very good family, Armand Duval, for a fashionable courtesan, Marguerite Gautier. The author wanted to immortalize his meeting and his passion for Marie Duplessis. By bringing her back to life, he denounced the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie and male hypocrisy and defended women as victims of laws made by men. Marcel Pagnol’s adaptation emphasizes this defense of a heroine who is an innocent victim of class prejudices.
